I had previously found Shade Allen Sammons in the above census reports,
and set out to find more about him. I was elated to learn he was a man
held in very high esteem in the two Arkansas counties his life had
touched.
Shade Allen joined Co. F. of the Third Arkansas Cavalry in the Civil War in
July 1861. He fought for the Confederacy in numerous engagements in Mississippi
and the great battle of Chickamauga until captured Dec 29, 1863 at Mosey
Creek Station, in east Tennessee.
After that it was his misfortune to be a prisoner of war at Rock Island,
Illinois until March 5, 1865
He married Harriet Emily Ely in Hot Spring Co AR 29th Dec 1868, him age
26 and her age 25.
Either he or Harriet had a child named Ida before their marriage, since
Ida May Sammons was born 07 Feb 1866. In any case, he willed Ida $500
in his will.

It seems Shade Allen was a born business man, as in 1870 he
was a Hotel Proprietor in Malvern AR-Hot Spring Co. By 1882
he was buying half of Hot Springs AR-Garland Co. - Hot
Springs Reservation.
I found 14 different items of property there. The first was
in Shade's and his mother-in-law,
Elizabeth Davis, names. I assume she was a co-signer, mainly,
or she may have been his financial backer. All the others
were in his name.
One of Shade Allen's business ventures in downtown Hot
Springs AR was a more or less "General store."
He named it S.A. SAMMONS & SON. His son being Fred.
Shade Allen owned the Corner of Central Ave. & Olive Streets.
There is still a sign (very rusted) saying S.A. SAMMONS & SON on the
top side of the store. Photo by Charlotte Ramsey 8-20-98.
Shade Allen's son Fred owned a very beautiful home at 318 Quapaw Avenue.
It is now a Bed & Breakfast, named "The Gables Inn" listed with the Bed
& Breakfast Association of Arkansas at:
http://www.bbonline.com/ar/gablesinn/ Be sure and visit their homepage.
I am sure they would appreciate you making reservations and staying in
the home a few days, if you go to Hot Springs, AR. They have restored
it beautifully!

Next, I found Greenwood Cemetery, where the whole family is interred.
It is a HUGE cemetery, which covers about 6 blocks square, with many
acres and additions.
If you are of the Shade Allen Sammons Family Please contact me. nicki@cei.net
Also in Greenwood Cemetery, I found E.H. Sammon 1882-1937
I took a photo of his stone when I went back to Hot Springs Sep 4, 1998
and have since found his death recorded in the Arkansas Death Records.
His name was Edward Hamilton Sammon and he died 28 Oct 1937.
He doesn't seem to be connected to our Sammons at this time.
